First Hummingbird!

You have to get up pretty early to see a newly arrived migratory bird before Iris spots it at Greensboro Birds. She's keeping a running calendar of when she sees the first and last migratory species this year. (I thought I had her on the first Catbird of the year, which arrived in my garden on Friday, but naturally, Iris saw one Thursday.)

Well, I didn't get up early this morning but Teresa did, and she was rewarded with a glimpse of the first hummingbird of 2008! (We just put the feeder up yesterday.) I saw the little creature this afternoon, so I can vouch that she wasn't making it up.

(And I'm still seeing white-throated sparrows. Doesn't it seem a bit late for them to be hanging around?)

The WT Sparrows usually stick around our garden until right before spring count which is mid May.

Hooray for the Hummer. We hung our feeder yesterday in hopes to see one in our garden. We saw one at the park yesterday.

Ugh! I've had the hbird feeder up for a few weeks now and the only thing interested in it is an endless line of ants. Well, I'll always have that catbird to fall back on. Also, I'm thoroughly enjoying this competitive microbirding.

I was glad to see her...wonder if it's the same one from last year, since she found the feeder so quickly?

That late, huh Lisa? I've never kept exact track before, but I'm doing it this year, so we;ll see.

I'm enjoying our competition too, Iris! Of course, I feel like I'm shooting hoops against Michael Jordan...

Hi David,

My first hummer (male) came to my feeders on April 10. But it's been slow. I've seen two females at the feeders at once but it's rare. We're already in the first week of May!
