An Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Three of these marvelous creatures were feeding on the lantana this morning.
And two new butterflies for me. I originally thought this tiny, dime-sized butterfly was a Gray Hairstreak, but Sherry from Q's Corner identified it as an Eastern-Tailed Blue. Sherry, I think you're right--this one does have the little tail, and he flies very close to the ground. Thanks for the ID help! (Sherry, by the way, has some great photos on her blog--check it out!)
This one looks like a Red Banded Hairstreak.
More Swallowtail closeups.

Great shots! What are you using for camera and lens?
Gorgeous photos!!
Thanks Layanee. My camera is a Pentax K110D (a digital SLR) and I took these photos with the 18-55mm lens that came with it. I cropepd and enlarged the photos on my computer.
Thanks lcshores. Butterflies are beautiful animals, aren't they?
Hi Dave,
Thanks for visiting me today! I'm glad you did. I love your blog. Your photography is terrific. I'll learn a lot here - I didn't know butterflies crave Lantana. You would like Q's Corner on my blogroll. Her butterfly shots are wonderful, too.
I'll be back.
Hi David,
I am so glad I found you!
I think the first little butterfly is an Eastern Tailed-blue. It looks like the ones in my yard.
The Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are so beautiful! I love the close ups.
I enjoyed reading your journal! I want to go look again!
I have never seen the Hairstreak...
Beautiful!
Thanks,
Sherry (Q from Q's Corner)
Thanks Mary-Nice to have another NC blogger. Love your blog. And thank you for pointing me to Q. She has some great photos.
Speaking of Q...Welcome, Sherry. Your blog is awesome. Thanks for the ID help on the butterflies. I'm just learning all the different kinds. I believe you're right on both of them!
Great butterfly & bird shots!!...
and thanks for identifying them!!
Thanks Catherine--don't take my IDs to the bank on butterflies, though. Birds I know, but not butterflies. Cool fern pictures on your blog!
David: What photo software do you use? Thinking of investing! Thanks!
Layanee, Paint Shop Pro came with my camera, but about all I do on that is crop and enlarge. Something like Photoshop might be better for enhancing or correcting photos. I think Paint Shop is really more for creating cool graphic effects.
I love your photos, and I was so proud of the ones I posted on my blog (Jewels in teh Garden). Then I came over here. I have camera envy. I have lantana envy too! I think I must plant some next year. We have to treat it as an annual here becuase it doesn;t make it through the winter. But I think it would be worth it since the Jewels love it so much.
